Tough Mudder: Spiritual Applications

Tough Mudder obstacles each had an option to opt out. There were options to go around. We could physically see what was in front of us and the consequences of following through with it and decide from there if we wanted to complete that obstacle.

In life we are faced with situations and decisions to make, but we cannot see the outcome. We can’t see the other side of the obstacle and we get scared of the unknown. God gave us free will to choose whether we wanted to “go around obstacles” if we so please. We can opt out of different opportunities we are faced with. We can opt out of witnessing to a certain person. We can also opt out of opportunities by staying in something we shouldn’t be, such as a relationship, a job, or a habit. In a moment we can deny the voice of God and choose to not follow through with obedience. When we choose to opt out of those opportunities though, we also opt out of the blessings that come from obedience. We find HIM in the unknown.

  • 2 Timothy 2:3 Thou therefore endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

-Hardness there means undergo hardships, endure afflictions, and suffer trouble.

BUT soldier there means a CHAMPION of the cause of Christ.

When we are obedient to God and endure those hard times that come because of being obedient to God, we are a champion for Christ.

In your spiritual walk, are you opting out of opportunities that God has placed in your life? Are you going around obstacles because you’re scared of the unknown?

Mud Pit

There was a mud pit that had several holes dug into it. With it being mud, you couldn’t tell where the holes were at. So we had to feel around and go very slowly, making sure not to fall into the holes.

This reminded me of our Christian walk. Sometimes we go through our walk, and suddenly the devil lays a trap and we fall. He strategically maneuvers in our life and place traps that he knows we will fall for. We could be perfectly alright in our relationship with Jesus, and BAM. Satan places a trap called distraction, and we fall into it. Distraction, Depression, Doubt. Sometimes, we fall in that mud pit and curl up and stay there in the trap called comfortability. When we have an encounter with Jesus it changes us. That once muddy pit becomes clear with Gods clarity, and we can discern the traps that the devil is trying to trap us with.

  • Ephesians 1:17-18 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him; The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.

There was an obstacle in which three people had to jump into a small area filled with ice and water. We had to fight through the ice and coldness and swim underneath a ledge and out the other side. When I was under the water, I opened my eyes and all I could see was pitch black. While I was swimming underneath the ledge I got hit in the face by one of the other mudders. I panicked and went to swim up, but I wasn’t at the end of the ledge yet. It was a numbing feeling, physically and emotionally. In that moment I had an overwhelming fear until I was able to get to the end of the ledge and come up.

  • Sometimes in our spiritual walk we feel overwhelmed. We feel like we’re drowning in this huge tub filled with obstacles that we have to claw our way through. Fear, depression, hurt, financial issues, sickness, doubt. They all NUMB you both physically and emotionally, just like the tub of ice water. We try to see the light and hope in the situations we face, but sometimes we only see darkness. At times we panic and often we quit and give up too early. We come up for air when we’re just about to break through to freedom, and we end up drowning in defeat. But if we persevere to the end, we’ll be victorious over that fear. Over that depression and doubt. Over that hurt that we have been allowing to drown us. A song that I talked about before, “When pain is an ocean you are swimming in, if I can’t pull you out, I’m diving in.” When we face these situations that absolutely sink us down to our lowest level, we are never alone. When I see you drowning, I’m diving into that hurt with you. I’m going to endure it with you. Just like when Jesus see’s his children hurting. He’s going to dive into that bucket of ice water and swim you to the ledge and you’re going to break through to freedom, BUT only if we allow him to.
  • Isaiah 41:10 Fear thou not, for I am with thee; be not dismayed: for I am thy God. I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee. Yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Electroshock Therapy: In this obstacle we had to run through an area that had hay bales and mud holes dug into them, and electric shock wires dangling from the top. We sat back and observed people running through this at first and I got to the point where I almost didn’t go through with it. I saw big burly strong people fall down to the ground in an instant. I was terrified of the pain to come. I told everyone I didn’t want to do it and almost opted out of it. At the last minute I got a burst of courage and went through. Although it was painful, there was an awesome satisfactory finish.

  • Too often in this day and age we see so many “Big, strong, burly” Christians who fall to the ground. Multiple megachurch pastors, or even just Christians who have served Christ for years are falling away and compromising their faith for the world. Compromise is deadly and there are so many “big” sins that we fall into. But God showed me a different application through this obstacle. The wires are small but have such a strong effect. Too often in our lives, we let the little things get to us. Gossip, dispute, a bad look, or even a miscommunication. We let these little things tear us up. We sit and think of them, dwell on them, and let them destroy our relationships in the body and in our relationship with God. When we are so close to something God has for us, we let the little things in and destroy us. We have GOT to set our sights on God alone and recognize the silly things we allow to overtake us.

The Pyramid Scheme. This was my absolute favorite obstacle. It was all about camaraderie. There was a curved halfpipe with a mud moat surrounding it, and there was no way to complete this one alone. Once my team helped me get to the middle, people at the top reached down for my hand and pulled me up. Once I was at the top, people were reaching up for help, so two guys grabbed my feet and I was reaching down grabbing people and pulling them up.

  • We CANNOT fight this fight alone. We need one another! One of my favorite things about the whole idea of Tough Mudder was the team aspect. It didn’t matter at all who you were, everyone helped everyone. I was reaching my hand out for people that I’ve never met. People need that hand. There are no limits to what God can do when we reach out to others.

At the end of the race we ran to the volunteers who then crowned us with head bands as a symbol of our accomplishment. How amazing will it be when we run the race God has appointed us to run, and we receive that crown of life?

Tough Mudder made me feel like a soldier on a mission. I was running a race with so many other people with the same goal in mind. Along the way you’re going to get muddy. You’re going to get hurt and experience pain. You’re going to have to make decisions and build up courage to face things that you may have never thought you could face. But, you’re also never going to be alone. So many people are rooting you on, lending a hand, and pushing you to never quit or give up. When we feel overwhelmed, God says I am Jehovah Jireh, your provider. When you feel hurt and the pain is too much to bear, and you want to quit, God says I am Jehovah Rapha, the Lord that heals.

  • 1 Corinthians 9:24-25

24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

Run so you may obtain!
